Byng Island Conservation Area occupies a unique geographic position at the very mouth of the Grand River, where the river's final kilometres widen into a delta before emptying into Lake Erie. This convergence of river and lake creates an exceptionally rich aquatic ecosystem and one of the most productive fishing environments in southern Ontario.

The conservation area is managed by the Grand River Conservation Authority and offers a range of outdoor activities. Paddlers love the calm backwaters and channels around the island, which are perfect for kayaking and canoeing. The sheltered waters near the island are much calmer than the open lake, making it suitable for paddlers of all skill levels.

Fishing at Byng Island is exceptional. The mixing of river and lake waters creates ideal habitat for walleye, yellow perch, channel catfish, and largemouth bass. Spring walleye fishing here is among the best in Ontario, drawing anglers from across the province. The area is also a productive spot for ice fishing in winter.

The conservation area has a campground, boat launch, and picnic facilities. It's an excellent base for exploring the lower Grand River by water. From MoonLake Cottage, it's a 15-minute drive — close enough for a day trip or an extended paddling adventure.
