Port Maitland Harbour & Lighthouse

Port Maitland Harbour sits at one of the most dramatic natural junctions in Ontario — the exact point where the Grand River empties into Lake Erie. The harbour has been a working port since the early 1800s, and the white lighthouse standing at the end of the pier is one of the most photographed landmarks on the north shore of Lake Erie.

The pier itself is a favourite evening walk for cottage guests. It stretches several hundred metres into the lake, giving you unobstructed 180-degree views of the water. On calm summer evenings, the sunset turns the lake gold and pink — the kind of view that makes you stop mid-sentence.

The harbour is also a hub for local fishing activity. In spring, you'll see anglers lined up along the pier casting for walleye as they run up from Lake Erie into the Grand River. In summer, pleasure boats and kayakers share the calm waters near the mouth. Birdwatchers will spot cormorants, herons, and migratory shorebirds year-round.

From MoonLake Cottage, the harbour is a 5-minute walk along Port Maitland Road. It's the kind of place you'll visit multiple times during your stay — once to explore, once to watch the sunset, and once more because you can't help it.
